The ninth annual Run for Riley is scheduled for October 11th at 2:00 PM. The 5-mile race and 5K walk serve as a fundraising event for Riley Hospital for Children. Riley is Indiana’s only comprehensive children’s hospital. Each year, over 7,000 children from our area of the state receive services at Riley. As part of a non-profit hospital system, Riley relies on the generosity and support of donations to continue providing care to children and their families. The Run for Riley event is designed such that sponsor contributions cover all of the event’s expenses, and 100% of the race fees paid by participants go directly to Riley.

Each year, Run for Riley has increased its participant numbers, and thus the funds raised for Riley Hospital. Last year was a record year, and this year’s goal is to raise $50,000 through the event. By registering for the event, it is possible to make a contribution in addition to the race fee as part of the registration process. All of those additional contributions from participants go directly to Riley. Here’s the really cool thing about how Run for Riley can accomplish its $50,000 goal this year – if race registration fees and any additional donations from participants total $25,000, there are donors who have agreed to contribute an additional $25,000. With a registration fee of $30, that means that $25,000 will be raised if 833 people sign up this year. Last year’s participation numbers were well in excess of that, so the $50,000 goal is very achievable.

Run for Riley is a very well organized race on a nice course, and it gives you the opportunity to run a race at a distance that you don’t find very often in area races. The 5K walk is also on a very nice route, and it’s a great way to spend a fall weekend afternoon. [The Colts aren’t playing that day as they have the Thursday night game that week, so we don’t even have to worry about setting the DVR or trying to listen to the game on the radio during the race.]

Packet pickup and last chance registration will take place at 3RRC the day before – Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

I’ve run Run for Riley many times. It’s a great race, a very nice event to be a part of, and I always feel good about making a contribution to this worthy cause. I hope to see you there.
